Further to my last post about working on several projects including more books about ADHD, autism and PDA… with some other topics on the way…
I wanted to share that I was asked recently why I won’t just write ‘normal’ stories, and why they have to always involve neurodiversity.
After my last post, I got back to working on one of my ADHD books, and wound up in tears.
My stories mean something to me and the people they are written to support because they explore these experiences from the inside.
They are based on lived experiences and address a lot of difficulties we face, including the attitudes and assumptions that other people have or make about us.
I get frustrated because my books cannot cover every theme and experience that I would love to explore… but at the very least, I wish to try and open people’s minds and share how it feels to live in a world that isn’t made for you.
Although they may just seem like silly children’s stories… they signify so much more.
In the book I’m currently working on, my character just experienced acceptance… and it was so emotive for me as the author…
As ND people, we experience a lot of trauma… just from being us… and it is so hard to communicate.
I hope my books go some way towards helping people to express themselves and as always, promote understanding.
